Taiwanese Investors Look to Buy Overseas

The potential to gather substantial returns and a perception of lower risk abroad has led to an increasing amount of interest being shown in overseas property investment by Taiwanese buyers.

According to a survey by Chinatrust Real Estate, 36.5 per cent of respondents have expressed an interest in buying homes or land abroad, up 5.6 per cent from a similar poll a year previously.

The firm has claimed that Taiwan's recent signing of the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement with China and the establishment of direct flights between Taipei city's Songshan airport and Tokyo and Shanghai last year, have boosted the opportunities of people to buy overseas.

China was the most popular choice for 57.6 per cent of the people with interest in foreign property, while Japan came in second at 28.7. Meanwhile, 20.8 per cent of the respondents were looking at property in South East Asian countries.

"Judging from the findings, it is clear that geographic proximity and cultural affinity are the prime factors behind Taiwanese people’s preference for China and Japan," said Mr Hu.
